The Ruby-throated hummingbirds have migrated farther south now. Only a few stragglers remain. The number of birds we saw this fall was far fewer than past years.
The most at our house in Needville at one time was about 12. They nectared almost exclusively from the garden flowers. I maintained three feeders, but they were barely used. In past years I've had to scramble to keep eight feeders full.
There was a better showing at the travel trailer in Matagorda. The greatest number seen at one time was around 100. And while that may sound like a lot, it is not as many as previous years. Normally I have to refill 16 feeders twice a week. This year the nectar in 16 feeders lasted two weeks.
We did not experience drought conditions this year and that may be the reason why numbers were down. Maybe this is what is normal when there is plenty of natural food along the migration path.
I will always enjoy feeding and watching these beautiful birds, no matter how many show up.
So long for now little birds. See you again next year.
